Barry Norman

Barry Norman is Britain's most respected and popular film critic. He became famous as the regular presenter of the BBC Film programme, starting in 1972 with Film 72; by the time he left after Film 98 he had become a household name. He moved to Sky to work on their newly-launched movie channels.

He has presented many other flagship BBC and ITV documentaries and programmes, including Tonight and Omnibus. In the late 1970s and 1980s, he wrote and presented four acclaimed series on The Hollywood Greats and one on The British Greats, and the ten-part BBC series Talking Pictures, each of which was backed up by best-selling books.

His radio work has included presenting Today, Going Places, The News Quiz, Breakaway, The Chip Shop and Freewheeling. In 1996 he presented a series for Radio Five Live talking to world class sportsmen who have gone on to have second careers, such as Dick Spring, Ireland's Foreign Minister, and Nicki Lauda.

Barry has also written many novels including To Nick a Good Body, End Product, Tales of the Redundance Kid, A Series of Defeats, Sticky Wicket, The Birddog Tapes, The Mickey Mouse Affair, Have a Nice Day and Death on Sunset. His non-fiction books include The Good Night In Guide, 100 Best Films of the Twentieth Century, Barry Norman's Video Guide, The Radio Times Family Video Guide, and the autobiographical volume And Why Not?

Barry has had great success with the release of two interactive DVD quizzes, Barry Norman's Film Quiz and Barry Norman's Christmas Movie Quiz. He has recently used a favourite family pickle recipe as the basis for his own range of pickled onions which can now be found on shelves in Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury's.
