Lord Hurd left the Diplomatic Service in 1966 in order to work for Edward Heath whose office he ran when he was Leader of the Opposition. He followed Mr Heath into 10 Downing Street in 1970 and served as Political Secretary to the Prime Minister during the lifetime of that Conservative Government. Margaret Thatcher promoted him to the Front Bench as Opposition Spokesman for Europe and when she won the General Election of 1979 made him Minister of State at the Foreign Office. After a brief period as Minister of State at the Home Office he entered the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 1984. He served there for one year before being brought back to London as Home Secretary. He worked for nearly five years at the Home Office and then for slightly longer as Foreign Secretary from 1989 until he resigned in July 1995. He stood for the Leadership of the Conservative party in 1990, but once John Major won this contest he worked with him closely through the Gulf War, the long debated on policy for Europe and the Bosnia Crisis.
