David Owen was one of the founders of the Social Democratic Party which was formally launched on 26 March 1981. He became Deputy Leader of the Party in 1982 and was Leader of the SDP from 1983 until 1987 when he resigned over the merger with the Liberal Party. He was re-elected SDP Leader from 1988-1992. David was created a Life Baron in 1992 and was Co-Chairman of the EC Peace Conference on Yugoslavia 1992-1995. He is a superb statesman and is much sought after on the international speaking circuit.
